Eating egg shells can be a good source of calcium.

You can use any kind of egg to get these nutrients. In one egg shell you can get 750-800 mgs of calcium. It’s recommended you take 400 mgs of calcium per day and always take the equal amount of magnesium.

What’s the Best Way to Eat Egg Shells?

You can powder egg shells and make eggshell calcium citrate from them.

Add 1/2 teaspoon of powdered egg shell to a small dish with the juice of 1/2 a lemon. Mix together, and it will start to foam and bubble. Leave this at room temperature for at least six hours but no longer than 12. You can then take this by spoonfuls and wash it down with water.

The longer you let the mixture sit after mixing, the less gritty it will be. You should also take 400 mgs of magnesium citrate at the same time.

How to Make Powdered Eggshells

One whole medium sized egg shell will yield one teaspoon of powder. From this you get calcium, magnesium, boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, sulphur, silicon and zinc.

  • Wash the empty egg shells in boiling water to remove all of the egg white and to sanitize, but keep the membrane. The membrane includes nutrients that are good for joints and relieve arthritis.
  • Dry the pieces on paper towels thoroughly.
  • Break them into small pieces and grind them into a fine powder. You can use a food processor, blender, coffee grinder or put them in a baggie and use a rolling pin.
  • Store the powder in a covered glass jar or container and store in a dry place.

Organic Egg Shells vs Non-Organic Egg Shells vs Free Range Egg Shells

Some people prefer the organic eggs or free-range to other eggs. Their egg shells may have differences in chemicals due to how the chickens were raised. To qualify as organic, the eggs have to come from organic-fed chickens – no pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or anything like that. Organic eggs are less affordable, but will ensure that you keep those chemicals out of your body. The chickens live in a cage-free environment, most likely an enclosed pen.

Free-range eggs come from chickens that have been allowed access to a fenced in patch of land. They are not raised with the same organic standards. Non-organic eggs are of course the most common that you find in your local grocery store. They may have been given antibiotics or hormones to increase egg production and molting.

The one important tip when choosing your eggs is that the thicker the egg shell, the more nutrients.
