Aspirin can be expensive. What’s the benefit to doing this over some topical salcylic acid treatment that you don’t have to mix yourself? I can see the benefit of the lemon but not the baking soda. Seems like a lot of work for a remedy that is readily available?

Actually aspirin is fairly inexpensive. Dollar tree sells large bottles of uncoated aspirin for $1. If you don’t have a store in your area, try buying generic. There is no difference.

It really works!!!! I tried it today and my skin was really soft, brighter, and a light brown spot that I have on my cheek was lighten even more!! I placed 6 aspirins in a glass bowl and juice from half of a lemon( mix well). Then with a cotton ball I put it on my face like I would a mud mask (AVOIDING– eyes and lips). Left the aspirin & lemon mask for 10 minutes. While i waited I mixed a cup of water with a teaspoon of baking soda. After the 10 minutes, I soaked 2 cotton balls in the water & baking soda mixture and proceeded to wipe off the mask starting with the chin, upper lip, cheeks and finally the forehead—close eyes so you don’t get any mixture in your eyes! (Warning—when wiping your face with the water & baking soda–IT WILL STING—However continue to wipe until all the mask is completely off. Then rinse the entire face with cool water. —I plan to do this 2 times a week because I loved the results after just one time. Of course I also plan to apply sunscreen protection for my face!

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid): decomposes to salicylic acid which increases cell exfoliation and is anti-bacterial
Lemon juice: Citric acid wards off oxidation (like the browning of an apple slice)
Baking soda: neutralizes the acidic lemon juice in the event you would get it into your eyes

I have to say, I just did this and it is FANTASTIC!! I got bottle of aspirin at the Dollar Store for $1, Lemon juice (instead of fresh lemons) for $1.85, and baking soda I already had…which is about $.86…so it’s definitely much cheaper and very easy. It was different feeling when I took the mask off with the baking soda and water….it was slightly painful for a second. I’m assuming a real chemical peel is much worse! Anyhow…I loved it, and will definitely be using this again.

I’ve been a make-up artist for 25 years and I can see how this might be beneficial. The salicylic acid will have the same benefit of an AHA (alpha-hydroxy) treatment. That will help to slough off dead skin cells and rejuvenate the cell layer underneath. Not sure about the lemon juice. I can see how it would be irritating because it’s another acid and it’s a tricky thing to get your skin to absorb Vitamin C through the skin. Baking soda is a wonderful exfoliate. I recommend it to all my clients as a scrub. 1X per week for normal skin, 2-3X per week for oily. I would remove the aspirin mixture, then make a paste with baking soda and water in my hand and gently massage onto skin, then rinse thoroughly.

Just enough lemon juice to make a paste with the aspirins. I just use three aspirin and add a teaspoonful of juice or water. As for the baking soda, I’d guesstimate; a couple of teaspoonfuls is what I’m using.

Gretta, um where are you buying aspirin that its so expensive? The lemon juice has healthy vitamins and the baking soda acts as an additional exfoliant and like the recipe says it neutralizes the acid so that your skin doesnt get overdried or too irritated. And why yes you could just use the pre-made store washes but, once again, like the article stated; in these economic times some ppl actuallly benefit by making face washes w/ commmon household items they already have instead of buying face wash from the store. Try reading it and using common sense.

Aspirin can be very expensive, it depends on where you live. I live in Germany and I get 20 tablets for 7€, which is around 9,50US$.
Of course lemons and baking soda are cheap, but because of the aspirin this can be a very expensive face mask for some of us… 😉

I just tried this and here was what I experienced:
I used a fresh lemon and it turned out to be too much juice so I added another 10-13 asprins to the 12 I had, still didn’t make a paste but I used a cotton ball to blott it on and it seemed to work well.
The first 5 or 6 minutes it burned and itched almost unbearably (I am assuming that was the chemical peel effect). but once it started drying it went away.
I used a cotton ball dipped into water then dry baking soda and swabbed my face with it (using a fresh cotton ball and re-dipped). The baking soda and the acid reacted and foamed and got warm, but not uncomfortably.
I then rinsed my face with warm water and blotted dry.
What I saw shocked me, in a great way, my skin was smooth, soft, clear pores, felt hydrated and just looks so healthy! I will be using this again! Does anyone know how often to use this?

Oh by the way I have pretty sensitive skin and I did not break out in a rash or bumps 🙂

Angelica/Jane: I use this mask once per week. Typically on a Sunday I clean my face, apply the mask and then moisturize very well after. I try to do this on a day when I can go without makeup so that my skin can breathe.

If you want the consistency to be a bit thicker and not as drying, try mixing honey with it (about a teaspoon).

    Here’s my mix:
6 uncoated aspirin (any more than that can be quite drying- for me at least)
1/4-1/2 of a fresh lemon squeezed over top of the aspirin
1 teaspoon of honey mix thru

*the lemon juice will help break down the aspirin. Once you see them start to look puffy, just tap them with your finger and they will collapse into mixture.

If you want to follow with a homemade moisturizer try a mixture of egg whites and plain Greek yogurt (or just Greek yogurt).

I am also gonna try the fresh lemon juice as a spot corrector / bleaching agent.

As of now I use aspirin as a cleanser by using it as a scrub., I would use two tablets and that would be my cleanser. I think this helped my acne problem because usually new pimples would appear almost everyday but now it’s just like one pimple a week. It’s not as overwhelming as before. I’m excited to try this mask maybe I’ll do it twice a week.

Don’t use this!! I asked my dermatologist about this today and she said to NEVER put aspirin on your face! The lemon will irritate your skin and could leave brown streaking – due to hyperpigmentation. Use plain ole’ store products.

I am an esthetician and try to use natural products often. This sounds great and have done something similar. The reason for not using baking soda more than 1 or 2 times a week is because it changes the normal ph balance of your skin. I did 7 facials today and sold a house…..uhhhh zzzzzzz.

I just tried this yesterday and i was blown away at how soft my face felt afterward! I used 5 aspirin, the juice of one lemon slice and a little splash of water. Used a cotton ball to apply and let it sit until it was dry. Used a mixture of baking soda and water, also applied with a cotton ball to wipe it off. Did this before I got in the shower and just rinsed my face with water, no cleanser needed! Seriously awesome.

If you can’t find non-coated aspirin, a dip in vinegar for about 20 seconds and a rubdown with a paper towel will remove aspirin’s coating.

(The coating buffers the aspirin by protecting it from stomach acid, so it doesn’t involve till it reaches the base pH in the intestines. So a base pH, like in vinegar, disolves the coating easily.)

Be careful using hibiclens on your face! It is very harsh on delicate areas and CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ISSUES IF YOU GET IT IN YOUR EYES AND/OR EARS!!! I work in an operating room and we NEVER use hibiclens near eyes and ears, we actually use antibacterial dial soap or baby shampoo in some cases. BE CAREFUL!!

Jennifer B, do a search oil cleansing. I’ve been on accutane and everything else with no success, and just started using olive oil and castor oil in place of my skin regimen a couple of weeks ago. The results are amazing! I was nervous to do it, but my skin is so soft and smooth, and though I still get a small surface pimple once in awhile, I have not had one sebacious cyst since I started it! This asprin/lemon/baking soda treatment once a week is the perfect compliment to it!

I read on the web to drink squeezed lemon with warm water every morning to help with weight problems so i tried it after the 2nd week i was clear skinned & i slowed down to once a week its been over a yr & im still clear!

It took longer to dissolve. I took my shower before I did this so my pores b open. Did about 6 aspirin with a fresh squeezed lemon. It tingled at first but when I used the baking soda with water it BURNT LIKE HELL. But the results in the morning were amazing. Black heads gone. Pimple flat not completely gone. Ok so I was intrigued with this Aspirin, lemon and baking soda mask by Dr. Oz and I decided to try it-I never had a problem with acne until I was in my 40’s-I guess I have what they call adult acne. Well I hate it and tried lots of stuff & money that didn’t work or even help- I wake up every morning with big red patches and pimples surrounding my nose, forehead, cheeks and upper lip-so I gave this a try and this is what my experience was-My face is so much more shiny, smooth and clear of red blotches/pimples-I never did feel the burning as others described-only tingling and tightness.I would use this 1-2 times weekly.

For those wondering about the Oil cleansing method and this lemon mixture…. if you have normal or dry skin take a day off of the oil cleaning method. If you have oily skin it should be okay if you do both, but its not neccessry you are cleaning your face with this mask so if you would like to was your face twice feel free. • For dry skin you may want to use a moisturizer after the peel (a little dab of extra virgin olive oil is great it brings your skin back to its pH level after the baking soda). Personally I would use this once a week on normal or dry skin twice on oily skin.

    1. Mash up 6-12 non-coated aspirins and combine with freshly squeeze lemon juice.
    2. Let the aspirin dissolve until it turns into a paste.
    3. Apply the mask to your skin and leave it on for 10 minutes.
    4. Remove the face mask by dipping a cotton round in some baking soda and some water.
