Today Show: Cleaning Tips That May Surprise You

Today Show’s Willie Geist and Al Roker worked together with Good Housekeeping executive editor Meaghan Murphy to reveal tips for keeping your house clean and germ-free. Learn how to keep your towels, sheets, bathroom, and kitchen spic and span.

How often should you clean your bath towels? Meaghan asked the guys whether they thought once per week was enough. What do you think?

The answer, according to Good Housekeeping, is that your towels need to be washed every three days. “They harbor bacteria,” she said. “When they start to get a little bit of that dank smell, put 1/2 cup of baking soda in the wash.”

Today Show: Clean Bathroom Daily in One Minute

How often should you clean the bathroom? The answer is that you really should be keeping up with it on a daily basis. “There’s a million bacteria on the toilet. Only 1-2% of them are actually going to make you sick, but why take a chance?” Murphy asked.

She suggested using a cleaning wipe on the points you touch most often, such as the handle, lid, and seat (don’t forget the faucet and doorknob). As for flushing, her advice is to close the lid first to prevent bacteria from spraying around the room.

Today Show: Change Your Sheets Weekly

Is it okay to change your sheets once per month? No, it’s not. Good Housekeeping said on Today Show to change your sheets weekly. Dead skin cells collect in sheets and pillowcases, providing food for dust mites. Wash your sheets on high heat to kill the dust mites.

Today Show: How Often Should I Clean My Fridge?

Did you know you are supposed to clean your fridge every time you fill it up, or about once per week? According to research, germs collect in the vegetable drawer, so clean it out with warm soapy water and/or baking soda. Garbage day is a great time to remember to check for any leftovers you may need to clear out.

Today Show: Cell Phone Cleaning Tips

What’s the best way to keep your cell phone clean? Bacteria from your hands and who knows where else can wind up on your phone. Use an alcohol wipe or an electronics wipe to cleanse the bacteria weekly, and don’t forget to remove the case. Use a microfiber cloth for maintenance in between.

Today Show: Wash Jeans Without Fading

How often should you wash your jeans? According to Murphy, they need to be washed every few wearings. Try turning them inside out to prevent fading, or use a product such as Woolite Dark. Freezing them won’t kill off the bacteria.
